The Truth Behind Preventive Healthcare

Now a days, the term called "Prevention" has become a cliche. Everywhere, you can see Hospitals and doctors speaking about 'Preventive Health Check-ups'.

You may say they are doing a pretty noble job by preventing disease. But look closely, are they really preventing any problems?

If you ask them how they prevent the diseases, they will elaborate number of steps.
  • You will be asked to go for (very expensive) blood tests like lipid profile.

  • Then as per the findings, you will be suggested some generalized lifestyle changes like cut down on fats, become more active, stay away from alcohol, give up smoking (even I recommend that) and eat healthy (How to do it, is usually out of question).

  • The next step is to give you some medication ( again a costly affair).

  • Then they will ask you to come for periodical regular check ups every 3-6 months depending on your condition.

All this doesn't come free, you will have to cough up hefty fees. If you are unlucky, like most people are and if there is some trace of high cholesterol, high blood pressure or high blood sugar found, then you are trapped in a very carefully woven health care trap.

All these people want to diagnose you early for any ailment so that you can become their (virtual) slave. I am using word 'slave' because after you are diagnosed with any of the above said conditions, you will have to do exactly what your Doctor asks you to do. You will have to eat as per his orders, you will have to take medication proscribed by him and last but not the least, you will have to pay the fees he demands. Tell me, is it anything less than being a slave?

Now let's ask final question. After doing all this, will the person be able to prevent the said disease? No!! He/she will eventually fall pray to it.
So where is the prevention? It is, in essence, an early diagnosis.

At most, progression of the disease may be slowed that to with the help of expensive medication. Why does it happen? Am I being very critical and prejudiced in my perspective regarding doctors? I don't think so.

Doctors are trained to find disease and treat it. And by doing that, doctors have been doing service to the mankind. But the matter of fact is, they are not trained to prevent any disease. They are good at diagnosing and subsequently treating. And they are damn good at it.

So who will rescue you from this? The answer is obvious. YOU!! You are responsible for your present state of health. Not your parents, not your spouse, not your job, not the fast food joints you eat at, nobody but you. People with no family history of diabetes or cardiac problems acquire these diseases. On the other hand, there are people who were genetically prone to certain diseases. But they acted on time, made some lifestyle changes and prevented those very ailments.

So, in essence, your lifestyle at large, not your genetics, will decide how healthy you are going to be. It is high time you took charge of your life. Act when those extra pounds are within controllable limits. Stop making excuses and make those necessary changes. Trust me, there is no other treasure than being healthy, fit and fine.
